The Name "Oread"
The name "Oread" (pronounced "or-e-ad") was chosen for a number of reasons. First, the University of Kansas (where Curt and Cheryl both attended law school) is located on Mount Oread in Lawrence, Kansas. The couple's KU and Wichita State University educations helped put them in a position to embark on this journey, and they wanted to somehow acknowledge at least one of those institutions.

Second, according to Greek mythology (Curt and Cheryl were married in Ios, Greece, while sailing through the Greek Islands in May/June 2000), an "oread" is a free-spirited nymph. The crew strongly believes that it was each of their free-sprits that brought them together.

Lastly, the poem "Oread" by Hilda Doolittle seemed to capture their confidence in the fragile relationship with the sea:

Whirl up, sea - -
whirl your pointed pines,
splash your great pines
on our rocks,
hurl your green over us,
cover us with your pools of fir.

Once the difficult task of deciding upon a name was completed, Curt's brother Craig was asked to design the name and logo.
